HI, EVERYONE ^_^! I've already seen a few articles about this 'thing' online, but I thought I'd ask / get the opinion from you all MYFC'ers ^_^!
Sooo...it's convention season again (yay), and I've already been to 3 really good ones in the past few months. Naka-Kon 2017, Star Wars Celebration 2017 AAAND last week's Planet Comicon 2017 :D. Had a GREAT, AWESOME time in all of them :D!
This post is about 'cosplayer booths charging $$$ to get a photo taken with them'. What do you think? I'm noticing this trend now and I'm not a huge fan of it so far :(. Pretty much, they have a booth where if you want to take their photo or have your pic with them, you have to pay up. This is kind of a turn off for me, and there have been a few cosplayers I wanted to meet, but their 'pay me' sign or '$5 per photo' sign kinda turned me off @_@.
When I used to cosplay, I did it for the fun and love of the fandom. And heck, the more pics I took with peeps, the more fun the cosplay was :D! There were even times when photos of me in cosplay popped-up in magazines and I didn't charge anyone (or even thought about charging anyone, for it!). I was just so happy to be a part of the fandom and being a face for that fandom and being a good contributor to the event/con!
I think that if you want to make money from your cosplay, you should sell prints or promote your website (like your patreon or whatever) where people can buy your stuff and pay for your stuff and services/videos/photos :). Heck, I even know of cosplayers who ended up making money by getting hired professionally by the fandom's company because their cosplay was just that good! So dream come true and I am so happy for those cosplayers :D!
Also, my "worry" is that if this practice of cosplayers charging money for photos become accepted practice, then more and more cosplayers will end up doing it, then going to cons won't be that fun anymore because every cosplay pic you take (which I love to do at conventions) will cost you a few bucks :(.
Anyhoo, whacha think, guys?
PS: OK, last thought, I guess --- If I was an event organizer, I'd pay for popular cosplayers to be in my event but would prefer for them to not charge for photos, because they will be a 'draw'/'attraction' to my event already :)! Does that make sense?
PPS: Not a cosplayer, but I LOVED how Timothy Zahn (uber author of Star Wars EU novels...Hi, Tim!) handled his autograph-signing. He would not charge you for autographs, granted of course that he's signing his work, which makes sense :). So you buy his book and get it signed for free, yay :D!
PPPS: So my Star Wars Celebration Gallery is online ^_^ [ LINK ]
(You should check out Darth Pikachuuuuu! I got a video of him tooooo!) and now working on getting my Planet Comicon stuff online too ^_^! I know I was supposed to do Naka-Kon but I only got a few dozen pics and they're kinda meh, lol.
Ending this post with a photo of Transformers R2 and Jedi Darkwing Duck (or DarthWing Duck? O_O) from Celebration ^_^!
HAVE FUN COSPLAYING, EVERYONE :D!!!
